Last week Gilles presented the final report of his 6 months internship at robonext. We asked him about his experiences!
Can you tell us more about yourself?
I am Gilles Gui, 24 years old and from Berlaar-Heikant (Balderhei). I am graduating this year with a Computer Programming degree at Thomas More in Geel, a study that I have been combining with the Innovation, Creativity & Entrepreneurship program since last year.
I consider myself a social person who is very active in volunteer life. Since the age of 13, I have been passionate about IT, but I also have many creative hobbies such as playing guitar, chess and I am also very sporty.
How did you end up at robonext?
Through my internship supervisor at Thomas More I heard about the internship opportunity at robonext. When I first heard about robonext, I naturally thought it was about programming “real” robots. So when I learned that it is actually about virtual (software) robots, this was a minor disappointment (it would have been my childhood dream come true), but I still saw the challenge of it. After a few tests and conversations, I was quickly told that I could start my internship at robonext.
Can you tell us about the content of your internship?
During the internship I was given the opportunity to fully participate in the development team of robonext. I learned to work with various technologies, for example Robotic Process Automation (RPA) technology from UiPath and Microsoft, and Penscript technology from Penbox. I had the opportunity to participate in internal projects on the one hand and to work on real customer projects on the other. For example, I have developed dynamic forms for a number of robonext customers, and I have worked on a robot that automates the administrative processing of timesheets.
Can you tell us about how you experienced your start at robonext?
When I first entered the Fortress of Edegem, where robonext’s office is located, I realized how beautiful and peaceful the area is. Later, when I got to know everyone, I noticed that the colleagues are nice people with a mentality that I learned a lot from. The first 4-5 weeks I had an entry-level period, in which I was given space and time to settle down in the company. Once the first project was done, I had a tremendous sense of pride and satisfaction. When the next project started I was already more confident and certainly with the last project, which I got through at least 3x faster than the first.
When my mother came along once, I realized that I had found my place in the team, because of the way she was received by the colleagues.
How did you experience the collaboration with robonext colleagues?
There is a very good communication and relationship between the operational team, management and developers. Because we strive hard for positivity, mutual strengths and weaknesses are also taken into account. It is a mix of individuals that together form a whole. This ensures that there is always something going on. Everyone here has their own path and learning process. We are committed to continuing to learn.
What did you learn during the internship?
I have learned a lot technically, but most of all I notice that I have become more mature through this internship experience. This is in many things, but especially in my self-confidence. By being able to do this internship I have become much more confident in my abilities. I am also more motivated to plan my daily life. In terms of soft skills, I have learned a lot about how to communicate clearly and in a timely manner to customers. I also feel that I have now really got the hang of continuing to work in I.T.
This was a very good internship experience for me with nice people who also helped me progress as a person.
What will the future bring?
I am very happy that I started working at robonext since the beginning of September, after completing my internship. I look forward to continuing to work together within this team on various challenging customer projects. My vision of robonext is that it is a healthy, young and growing company with a warm team and a realistic bright future, and I am proud to be a part of this.
