Whatever you’re building and whatever stage you’re at – you need smart people in your corner. Too simple? I’ve watched companies struggle for years because they hold onto teammates who haven’t evolved … “old thinking” keeps them stuck in the past.
Consider this your permission slip – It’s okay to move on.
But what about training them up? Or giving them just a little more time? Maybe. But every extra cycle you spend waiting is a tradeoff – it’s not just time and money, it’s the opportunity cost of who your future self (and company) could be…. maybe even deserves to be.
[shameless plug: that’s the beauty of bringing in outside advisors: you’re not locked in long-term, yet you can extract years of expertise in short windows]
Look for these smart people:
-
Institutional knowledge – veterans who know your industry and challenges cold. Especially those who are well connected.
-
Internal innovators – the overlooked voices inside your company who see better ways forward. Intrapreneurship is powerful – (Flaming Hot Cheetos anyone?)
-
Outside perspectives – specialists who bring fresh eyes and cross-industry insight. “All great innovations come from outside.” – J. Welch
Bear in mind – whatever problem you’re wrestling with has probably already been solved. The fastest path is to find the people who’ve solved it before – and hire them. That’s not just smart, it’s leverage.
